Artist and bakerLexie Smithstarted out with a stint as a pastry chef; now she spends a lot of time thinking about bread. Creator of the archive and online resourceBread on Earth, the artist has been exploring the potential of something many of us eat everyday without a second thought, or in her words: “the ultimate food stuff, synonymous with wealth, poverty, god, and the mundane.” Lexie will be taking to the Nicer Tuesdays stage to talk us through the research, archiving, recipe writing, baking and image making that has made the project into what it is today.

Need a kick of creative inspiration to fight the winter blues? Come and cosy up for some inspiring talks at our Nicer Tuesdays event in New York this coming February. To usher in the new year, we’ve got a bumper line-up of creative brilliance in store.
This time around we’ll be hearing from artist and bakerLexie Smith, more widely known as the creative mastermind behind Bread on Earth, as well as graphic designer and illustratorChantal Jahchanwho will be taking us through how she tackles one of her intricate editorial commissions.Daniela Spectorwill also be giving us an insight into her archival approach to photography, and New York’s one and onlyNew York Nicowill be sitting down with our US editor-at-large Elizabeth Goodspeed to talk about his career so far, following the release of his debut book.
The event will take place on Tuesday 18 February at the School of Visual Arts Theatre in Chelsea. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the talks will begin around 7pm. Better known to all 1.5 million of his Instagram followers asNew York Nico, the director and documentary maker Nicolas Heller has made a name for himself as ‘the unofficial talent scout of New York’, documenting some of the city’s most charismatic characters. With a platform showcasing short-form interactions and interviews with the locals, his page acts as a collection of real human stories, moving street portraits found in the fabric of everyday life. His love for storytelling and ability to capture unique characters has led him into narrative filmmaking as well as commercial work and campaigns for the likes of Meta, Nike, Timberland and Calvin Klein. Following the release of his debut book:New York Nico’s Guide to NYC, Nicolas will be sitting down with Elizabeth Goodspeed to discuss the origins of his widely loved Instagram page and his career in filmmaking thus far.

After a start at Pentagram, the designer made her leap into a freelance career in 2023 and has been using her skills in visual storytelling to translate words into wonderfully layered images ever since. Rooted in research and close to the heart, her work has highlighted Lebanese and Palestinian stories, human rights, and anti-colonial narratives. The designer will be taking the Nicer Tuesdays audience through her tried-and-tested approach for her editorial commissions, giving us a glimpse into her creative process.
