Butt Studio, Nwaka Okparaeke, The Earth Issue and Trevor Jackson
With autumn arriving and winter only around the corner, many of us are dreading the shorter evenings and colder weather to come. Balmy summer evenings spent in the park or outside the pub will soon be replaced by chilly ones spent indoors. But it’s not all doom and gloom – at least you can now head over to this month’s Nicer Tuesdays event FOMO-free, safe in the knowledge that everyone else is taking shelter inside too. Better yet, you can spend your time inside with a free drink from El Rayo Tequila and a seat in front of this month’s selection of inspiring speakers – not bad, hey?
At September’s Nicer Tuesdays, we’ll be hearing from creative agency and environmental platform The Earth Issue; designer and multidisciplinary creative Trevor Jackson; filmmaker and photographer Nwaka Okparaeke; plus Harry Butt from Butt Studio who will be giving us a how-to on dealing with creative failures. Their chosen topics of discussion will include how the creative industry can have more power by being more environmentally aware, how non-successes is actually the best teacher, and the benefits of being a one-man team in the design world.
Trevor Jacksonhas spent decades in the creative industry, working in a range of fields, from design and art to music and fashion. Naturally, he has a client list as long as your arm, filled with big brands such as Nike, Gucci and Apple, and iconic music artists like Massive Attack, LCD Soundsystem and Four Tet. Trevor will be joining our editor-in-chief Matt Alagiah for a Q&A on his long career and why, despite working with high-profile clients, he never felt the desire to build a team and become a commercial company.
As a creative,Isabelle Landichohas many strings to her bow, including styling, art direction and content creation, but it's her involvement in the sustainable fashion and intersectional environmentalism scenes that sit at the core of her work. This passion has seen her become both a public speaker and the fashion director ofThe Earth Issue, a creative agency and pioneering platform for the environmental arts. As such, Isabelle will be using her skills in public speaking and her knowledge of sustainable creativity to talk to us about how the creative industry as a whole can be more environmentally aware, and in turn more impactful.
With a name likeButt Studio, designer and animator Harry Butt is no stranger to the tongue-in-cheek. Though he describes his surname (and the name of his studio) as “a burden and a blessing”, we’re inclined to say, looking at his enviable practice and portfolio, that it’s been mostly the latter. After all, his clients include Boiler Room, Nike, Instagram and many other impressive names, and he has carved out a niche for himself in the design world through creating work that is consistently unconventional. And so, in the spirit of the unexpected, he will be joining us later this month not to discuss his successes, but his failures instead – with some handy advice on how he overcame them.
Creating visuals for musicians is no mean feat, especially when they’ve got a pretty massive cult following. This was the case forNwaka Okparaeke, who earlier this year took on the task of shooting and creating the cover art for Kojey Radical’s recent albumReason to Smile.Being no novice (the London-based photographer has shot the likes of Marcus Rashford, Rina Sawayama and Burna Boy) Nwaka rose to the challenge spectacularly, creating an album cover popping with colour and life. At September's Nicer Tuesday, Nwaka will talk us through how she approached the project, and how she developed the distinctively dreamy and surreal aesthetic style that defines her irresistible work.
